Facts about The Atlantic Wolf Fish

This type of fish is known by several names, including sea wolf, devil fish, and ocean catfish.

It is widely distributed in the Arctic regions as far north as Greenland.

The Atlantic wolffish is classified under the class Actinopterygii, order Perciformes, and family Anarhichadidae.

Its common name is Anarhichadidae.

The Atlantic wolffish moves very slowly in the water by undulating its body back and forth.

The tough skin of the Atlantic wolffish is used as raw material in various industries, such as leather goods production.

Its teeth are extremely sharp and terrifying, resembling wolf fangs and are known for their ferocity.

Despite being somewhat lazy, the Atlantic wolffish is very fast when chasing prey.

The Atlantic wolffish lacks a bladder, which forces it to swim all the time, the absence of a air bladder makes it feel heavy if it stops buoyant, pushing it to the bottom by drowning.

It lives semi-submerged in mud at a depth of about 20 meters or among rock crevices.

The Atlantic wolffish does not usually hunt or feed on soft flesh of other fish.

Reproduction stages of the Atlantic wolffish

The mating season for the Atlantic wolffish begins in September and October, with pairs forming strong bonds. Sometimes they mate for life, unlike many other fish species.
Females release unfertilized eggs into the water, and then the male fertilizes the eggs internally.
The female Atlantic wolffish lays thousands of eggs in large clusters among seaweed and crevices. It takes about three to nine months for the eggs to hatch completely. The parents are involved in raising the offspring.
Fish reach sexual maturity at a late age, usually around five years old or older in some cases.
