The barrel-eye fish is considered one of the largest types of fish that live in the depths, reaching a length of approximately 40 centimetres. It is distinguished by its large, luminous eyes that help it survive in the darkness of the depths.

The barrel-eye fish is distinguished by its frightening, legendary body that attracts the interest of many marine scientists and researchers.

The barreleye is thought to use its light-up eyes to attract prey and hide from predators in its dark underbelly.

The barreleye fish feeds mainly on small animals and small fish that live in the depths, making it an important part of the balance of the marine system.

Despite its beauty and exoticism, the barrel-eye fish faces great challenges due to marine pollution and overfishing, which makes it threatened with extinction.  Therefore, humans must conserve these unique marine organisms and maintain the balance of the marine system to ensure their continued existence in the future.

Let’s explore more about these fascinating creatures from teke trek.

About the barrel eyefish

The barreleye fish, also known as the spook fish, is a fish in the family Arredostratus, the only species of the genus Macropinna.

The barrel eyefish belongs to the phylum Chordata, of the class Actinomyces.

Where are Barreleye fish found?

Barreleyes live in the ocean’s mysterious twilight zone, 600 to 800 meters below the surface, looking up from their translucent heads with eyes that resemble mesmerizing orbs.

The eyes of the barrelfish are characterized by large spherical lenses, hence its common name (Macropinna microstoma).

What are the characteristics of the barrel eye fish

The barrel eyefish is a fish with a transparent head and large fins that help it stabilize without moving.

The barrel-eyed fish has two large green eyes with which it looks upward in order to detect prey and its movement forward when searching for food. This color actually comes from a yellow pigment, and works like sunglasses to help these fish track and monitor their prey. The eye pigment also allows them to distinguish between sunlight.  And bioluminescence.

The barrel eyefish has a small mouth indicating that it feeds on small fish, and it has a large stomach

The barrel-eye fish has two black eye-like tubes on the front of its head

 Reproduction stages of barrel-eyed fish

Barreleye fish reproduce by means of eggs and sperm. The reproductive process occurs by transferring the eggs from the female and fertilizing them with sperm produced by the male.  The eggs are hatched externally, where they are placed in water and fertilization occurs there.

After laying the eggs, the embryos develop within them for a specific period of time before the young hatch. The hatching time varies depending on the type of fish, but generally takes several days to several weeks.

Barreleye reproduction is an important part of its life cycle, and contributes to the continuation of the species and maintaining the balance of the ocean ecosystem.

 Barreleye predators

The barrel eyefish is considered one of the most predatory fish in the oceans, and feeds on a variety of marine organisms.

 Some walleye predators include:

 1. Whales: Whales are considered one of the most important predators of barreleyes, as they mainly feed on them. Whales chase and hunt barreleyes to obtain food.

 2. Sharks: Some types of sharks are predators of barrel eyes, as they feed on them as part of their diet.

 3. Other large fish: In addition, some large fish such as tuna, bluefish, and barracuda are potential predators of barreleyes.

In general, it can be said that the walleye fish faces a threat from a variety of predators in the marine environment, and this reinforces its role as an important part of the ocean food chain and ecosystem.

The Barrelfish  importance to the environment and ecosystem

Barrelfish play an important role in the marine environment and ecosystem due to several reasons:

 1. Barrelfish are considered part of the marine food chain, as they are food for many other marine creatures such as whales and large fish.  Therefore, it plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem and ensuring the sustainability of the marine food chain.

 2. The presence of barrel-eye fish in the environment is considered an indicator of the health of the marine environment, as the decline or disappearance of these creatures is usually considered an indication of the existence of serious environmental problems that affect the environmental balance.

 3. The existence of the barrel-eye fish is a source of excitement and wonder for scientists and researchers, as its studies can be used to understand more about the deep-sea environment and the conditions in which it lives, which contributes to the development of knowledge and scientific research.

So, it can be said that the barrel-eye fish is of great importance in maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem and ensuring the sustainability of marine life.
