 About the goldfish

The goldfish lives in fresh water, where the Chinese bred and hybridized it.  Then it began a journey to all parts of the world due to its distinctive color, in addition to a belief that it is a lucky fish, as it brings luck and happiness to the place where it is found. Among the most important specifications of this fish are the following:

This type of fish belongs to the family of cnidarians, phylum Omniformes, phylum Vertebrates, phylum Actinomycetes.

The body of the goldfish contains orange, yellow, and red pigment, and these colors are distributed throughout its outer shell.

Goldfish have two types of fins, two pairs of paired fins and three pairs of single fins.  These fins are located on each side of its body.

The body of a goldfish does not contain implants.

Goldfish have sensory buds that help them taste food.

Goldfish do not have teeth to cut food, so they crush food in the mouth.

 Goldfish have wide eyes.

The most important characteristic of the goldfish is that it has a very strong sense of smell and hearing, and this is due to it having many small bones close to the head, which helps it hear with extreme accuracy.

The weight of a goldfish ranges between 0.2-0.6 pounds, and its weight may exceed 5 pounds if the appropriate conditions are provided for it, such as a suitable place and food

Goldfish range in length from 4.7-16.1 inches.

 Goldfish live approximately 30-40 years.

These are the specifications that characterize the goldfish, through which it can be distinguished from other types of fish, so it is important to know them before acquiring it in your own tank.

 What color is the goldfish?

The golden color of this fish depends on several factors, including:

The color of pigments found in light-reflecting cells called chromophores.

The number of pigment molecules present in the fish.

The positioning of the pigment whether it is aggregated within the cell or dispersed throughout the cytoplasm.

Exposure to light, as it has been shown that fish exposed to light have a brighter color than those that are not exposed to light.  This is because darkness leads to the death of the pigment carrier cells in it.

The food that the fish eats also affects the color, as the pigment kantha xanthin is added to the goldfish’s food to enhance its color.

These factors affect the golden color of the fish, but it is possible that this species may be susceptible to the appearance of some abnormal colors such as spotted black, white, or even a mixture of white and silver.

How to take care of goldfish

Goldfish need special care to remain in optimal health, and this can be achieved by following some of the following tips:

1- The size of the tank designated for breeding: This fish needs a tank with a capacity ranging between 285-378 litres. The aim of this is to provide it with the necessary oxygen, as its waste needs large amounts of oxygen to carry out the decomposition process and thus generate toxic products such as ammonia, in addition to  A larger sink allows for a more effective water filtration system to be installed.

2- Aquarium temperature: Aquarium temperature plays an important role in the life of the fish, as it is possible for it to live in semi-frozen water or in tropical waters.  But it cannot tolerate sudden changes in temperature, so it is preferable to set the aquarium temperature to 20 degrees Celsius.

3- pH level: It is preferable that the pH of the aquarium water be between 7-7.4.

4- Food: The goldfish is fed with a diet specially formulated for it, and some sweets are also provided to it from time to time. Its diet is studied so that it is comprehensive and contains all the nutritional elements it needs, in addition to controlling the quantities.

Food is provided to it once or twice a day, provided that the duration of the food does not exceed 2-3 minutes only. This is because large quantities of food will harm the water and the fish.

5- Cleanliness: The aquarium needs regular cleaning once a week. This process is done by removing food remains using a net, and replacing 20% of the aquarium water with clean water that does not contain chlorine, while taking care of the temperature of this water.

6- Health care: The fish must be monitored periodically and ensure that it is not afflicted with any disease such as lethargy, color change, sores and lumps, swimming in a strange way, the appearance of wool-like growths on its body, loss of appetite, in addition to damage to the fins.

7- Location of the aquarium: Place the aquarium in a flat place away from direct sunlight, children and other pets, in addition to the vibrations resulting from sound systems and television.
